Support for families

 

Hanover provides services for families from our Cheltenham, Dandenong and South Melbourne sites. Our South Melbourne site is a dedicated centre providing accommodation and other support services for families.

If you’re experiencing homelessness or having problems with your home environment, we can help.

Our services

Your family may be referred to stay in our accommodation, receive one to one support or to access one of our programs.

Accommodation
We provide accommodation for families experiencing homelessness in Melbourne at our South Melbourne and Dandenong sites. Our accommodation is somewhere safe and secure where you can stay while you are supported to find more stable housing.

If you stay with us, you will have a dedicated worker who will support you. They will help you to put together a plan which will have positive steps you can take to improve your situation.

Facilities and programs
We have a number of resources available for families to use at our sites.  Speak to your worker to find out what’s currently available. Resources include:

  • specialist support for children
  • children’s tutor program*
  • children’s library*
  • wellbeing sessions on health, cooking and nutrition
  • computers with internet access
  • fun activities for families*.

One to one support
As well as supporting families in Hanover accommodation, we can assist people in accommodation provided by other agencies, and families waiting for housing.

If you are referred for this service, a worker will meet you with on a regular basis. This might mean offering you support with your current living situation, or assisting with your search for safe, affordable and secure housing.

Depending on your circumstances, our staff can also:

  • connect you with employment and training opportunities
  • advise on financial and legal issues
  • talk to other organisations including CentreLink, your child’s school or college on your behalf
  • put you in touch with other organisations who can help, including legal services, counselling providers, health services, and drug and alcohol services.

How to access our services

We take referrals for our accommodation and services from Opening Doors, a state wide program which coordinates support to people experiencing homelessness.

If you’re experiencing homelessness, at risk of losing your home, or you need to escape family violence, call Opening Doors on 1800 825 955.

This free call number is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your call will be answered by a worker who can put you in touch with an organisation closest to you.
